Man was created in the “Tzelem Elokim”, the Divine Image, refined and radiant. Our sages say that the heel of the body of Adam Harishon, the first man, was more radiant than the sun. A body on a level comparable to the soul, fit for eternal life.
In order to understand this matter, we need to know that all of the reality we are familiar with, including physicality itself, is in a state after the sin of the Tree of Knowledge. The inner dimension of the Torah (Kabbalah and Chassidus) reveals to us what is was like before this, which is the same degree of refinement of the body that will be in the days of Moshiach. The return of mankind to the “garments of light” of Adam the first man, after the descent to the “garments of flesh” via the sin of the Tree of Knowledge.
What is the extent of this descent? About this the Rebbe Rashab said “What we see is as physicality is not physicality…what we see came to be via the sin of the Tree of Knowledge”.
As a result of the sin of the Tree of Knowledge, this Divine Image became obscured by a coarse, materialized “garment”. At present, we do not perceive the Tzelem Elokim beneath, but only the coarse garment—the fleshly body which covers it.
According to the holy Arizal, those with a refined soul are capable of having a perception of this form (in Hebrew, צורה ). With the coming of Moshiach the coarse body will be discarded to reveal our true, radiant body—the Tzelem Elokim.
This Tzelem Elokim is the body of Yaakov Avinu who didn’t die but lives on in body as well as soul; it is also the body of the holy Rabbeinu Hakadosh who fulfilled the mitzvah of making Kiddush for his household after his passing. Tthe Rebbe learns that it is in the category of a physical body.
This booklet contains collected sources which, G-d-willing, will help us to attain a measure of clarity and understanding of a matter which is central to understanding the Days of Moshiach.
