“The (hidden) North”: Mashiach, Gog, Ingathering of Israel
Mashiach, Gog, Ingathering of Israel. They all relate to “the North”. North is “tzafon”, related to “tzafun” which means hidden. Think about this.
Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out;
Shir Hashirim 4:16
Comments Rashi: “this figure of speech symbolizes the ingathering of the exiles and from all the nations they will bring [them] as an offering to Jerusalem.”
Comments the Gaon of Vilna: “In the North are all the good things, as in (Tehillim 31:20) ‘How great is Your goodness that You have laid away (tzafanta=hidden and “put in the North”) for those who fear You’
Comments the Midrash Rabba: When the exiles who are situated in the North will be awakened and will come to the South, as it says in Yirmiyahu 31:7. And when Gog and Magog who are situated in the North will awaken and come and fall in the South, as it says in Yechezkiel 39:2, and when Melech Hamashiach who is situated in the North will come and build the beit hamikdash which is situated in the South, as it says in Yeshayahu, 41:25.
Behold I bring them from the north country and gather them from the uttermost ends of the earth, the blind and the lame amongst them, the woman with child and she who travails with child all together; a great congregation shall they return there.
Comments Rashi: Even the staggering ones among them I will not reject.
Comments the Malbim: Even in distant places where you won’t find but one blind and one staggering, two Jews and they are blemished, G.d have mercy, even though they are few and lack strength, even so I will do a miracle. Suddenly a great congregation will be born as if they were born in one day, that even places that seem like you wouldn’t find but a few Jews, and it would be impossible according to nature that they could go on the way, like a blind or limping one, nevertheless they will suddenly multiply by many who will guide them and a great congregation will return from there.
I have aroused from the north and he came; from the rising of the sun he shall call in My name.
Translates Yonatan ben Uziel: I brought speedily a king, strong as the north wind, and he will come as the sun comes out with its might from the east; I will strengthen him with My name.
Comments Radak: My father said this is Mashiach and this is correct.
Comments the Malbim: This is Gog who will come from the North. From the East is Melech Hamashiach.
I will say to the north, “Give,” and to the south, “Do not refrain”; bring My sons from afar and My daughters from the end of the earth.”
Comments the Malbim: Even Jews who are in the North who are closed up there with mountains surrounding them and they can’t get out from them (sound familiar…remember the Midrash about Alexander Mokdon), Hashem says to that part of the world to let them out.
