The Sun and its Sheath

Resh Lakish says: In the World to Come there is no gehinom, instead G.d will remove the sun from its sheath. It will heal the tzaddikim, not only that but they will delight in it. It will punish the evildoers, as it says “Here comes a day burning like an oven”.

Talmud Nedarim 8b

אומר להם, לכו עשו סוכה. הולכין ועושין סוכה כל אחד ואחד מהם. והקדוש ברוך הוא מוציא חמה מנרתקה, וכל אחד ואחד מבעט בסוכתו ויוצא, שנאמר

The Holy One says to the gentile nations who ask to do a mitzvah to go make a succa. They go and make a succa every one of them. The Holy One brings out the sun from its sheath and every one kicks his succa and leaves.

Midrash Tanchuma for Parashat Shoftim

It is written “shemesh umagen Hashem Elokim” (translation: sun and a shield Lord G.d), because the two names of Hashem and Elokim, which are nature and above nature, are analogous to the sun and to the sun’s shield. For when we look at the sun, we don’t actually see the sun itself. We see only its shield, its sheath, which covers the orb of the sun. The earth and its denizens can tolerate the sun’s light and radiance only because of its cloaking shield and sheath. This enables the light to be received and to effect the results that it does. Just as the cloaking of the sun’s shield and sheath enables the sun to be tolerated by the Earth’s creatures, allowing them to benefit from the sun’s light, the same is true regarding the Divine names Hashem and Elokim.

One Response to “The Sun and its Sheath”

  1. “no Jew will be left behind” is not the proper thought to hold.
One must realize that we have entered a most difficult and perilous time that will require a positive response from each one of us, as well as a strong community involvement. Without this has v’sholom many will be lost.
    teshuvanow.com is one positive answer.
